The greater Winston-Salem community has been hosting Overflow Shelters to serve our unhoused friends and neighbors during the colder months for over a decade. For the past several years, The Dwelling has been the organization coordinating that effort. We are so grateful for our countless partners that help us in this capacity in a myriad of ways, including donating items, volunteering time at our shelters, cooking and serving dinner to our overnight guests, doing loads of laundry, and packing breakfast bags to help send our guests out with a blessing for the day ahead.
This past winter was a bitterly cold one, with 45 nights below freezing. We had 14 days' worth of "severe weather protocol', with our coldest night registering just 11*. We are so very grateful for our dedicated team of volunteers who helped us flex to keep the shelters open when needed, ensuring the safety of our guests.
We would also like to thank our key partners in the Winter Shelter Effort, including our shelter sites, the City of Winston Salem, Forsyth County, Atrium Health, and Second Harvest Food Bank.
